Metal Additive Manufacturing makes it mark at TCT Asia 2017
Innovation drives 33% growth in international exhibitors and 20% growth in visitors
Chester, UK, Wednesday 5 April 2017 - Additive manufacturing (AM) in metals has been making the news for the last 12 months with seismic changes to the sector through the introduction of innovative new companies and process, and mergers and acquisitions activity. TCT Asia 2017, which took place the region’s leading fairground, SNIEC, 8-10 March, also saw metal AM surge to the forefront with 13 new metals machines on show across the 10,000 sqm of exhibition space.
The majority of new systems were selective laser melting machines from China-based companies. Now entering it’s fourth year, TCT Asia has seen numbers of China-based metal AM machines rise from one in the first year, as TCT’s Group Editor, Daniel O’Connor explained: “Discovering so many new metals AM machines at this year’s event was a real surprise. The rate of adoption and development is breathtaking in China and the wider Asian market, and where even a couple of years ago the region was seen as lagging the West, it’s catching up at a truly impressive rate.”
Interest from Western metal AM companies was once again evident, with EOS, Concept Laser, Renishaw and SLM Solutions returning to the event, joined by first-time exhibitors for 2017 GE Additive and Trumpf.
TCT Asia speaker, industry expert and Chair of the Additive Manufacturing Association in the UK, Graham Tromans, commented: “China has that manufacturing mind set and in China metal AM is seen as more of a manufacturing process compared to the plastic processes. The automotive and aerospace sectors are of the utmost importance to China’s manufacturing economy and that is why so many of the companies are developing metal machines. Despite the rise of Chinese machinery the Western companies maintain strong sales in China owing to a more refined process.”
Metals also played an expanded role in the three-day 3D technologies conference held on the show floor. Some 1100 conference delegates attended presentations from 45 high-level global speakers, with tracks on aerospace and automotive applications leading the interest in metal AM.
Weidong Huang, Professor at Northwestern Polytechnical University presented the state-of-the-art for Chinese metal additive manufacture, demonstrating the huge advances in real-world applications being made in the region. Dong Liu, Professor at the National Engineering Lab of AM for Large Metallic Components, BUAA, explored the technological challenges and impacts of AM for high-performance large and critical metallic components.
Beyond metals the show floor was home to an expanded line up of polymer and ceramic AM solutions, 3D scanning, metrology and inspection solutions, and software for design and process management. Duncan Wood, Chairman of VNU Rapid News Co. Ltd, organisers of TCT Asia commented: “This year’s event truly brought the whole of the 3D technologies world together for the Chinese market. While metals stole the show, the growth in development at all levels of the industry was clear to see, with TCT Asia living up to its promise to help manufacturers make better products, more quickly.
2018 and beyond
With year-on-year growth and increased international attendance TCT Asia is establishing itself as one of the leading 3D technology events within the Asia market. 2018 will witness further expansion in Asia with the introduction of TCT Korea as part of the global TCT Group portfolio. We recognise the niche global markets and provide our exhibitors and visitors with consistent quality shows tailored to help them enter foreign markets. The industry outlook is currently rather positive and the relocation for 2017 ensures that TCT Asia has the opportunity for further growth in terms of Exhibition space and remains a leading 3D manufacturing technology event in China.
TCT Asia 2018 will take place 1-3 March, 2018, Hall N1, SNIEC, Shanghai, China.

Global Focus on TCT Show
The UK’s annual showcase of 3D technologies for product development, manufacturing and engineering closed its doors in late September to rave reviews from visitors and exhibitors alike.
TCT Show, which took place for the 21st time in 2016, featured a plethora of world-class speakers, global technology releases and multiple European and UK debuts for new 3D technologies and their applications.
The event once again drew the global 3D tech world’s focus, with 20% of the 8,000+ attendees arriving from more than 40 countries to see 250 exhibiting companies from 24 countries.
From the minute the doors opened the hall buzzed with activity as visitors flooded in to see for the first time technologies from Carbon, RPS, HP, Admatec, Trumpf and more. The thirst for knowledge ensured that every development was given a hearing.
This enthusiasm poured over to the TCT Show Conference, where hundreds of attendees were able to hear about state-of-the art developments in 3D tech from Airbus, Thales, 3M, DARPA, and Siemens. One of the most powerful sessions — both demonstrating the power of the technologies on display at TCT Show and the power of the show itself — came from Sutrue and the Royal Brompton Hospital.
In 2015 the team behind Sutrue presented their concept on the Main Stage and explored the exhibition where they discovered the technology that would push their life-saving project to the next level. By the 2016 event, the team were about to conduct the first heart surgery using the devices that 3D printing had helped them develop.
The return of the TCT Start Up Zone and Inspex
Returning for the second year, the TCT Start Up Zone gave international 3D technology start ups a platform to present to the global stage. Each of the 16 companies were able to give their ‘elevator pitch’ to a packed auditorium — including the judges for the TCT Start Up Zone Award. The eventual winners, Laykanics, pitched an educational initiative with desktop 3D printing at its heart. Advertising in the TCT portfolio and consulting from leading AM expert, Todd Grimm, accompanied their cash prize.
The increasing focus on the inspection and metrology needs of the advanced manufacturing industries were reflected on the show floor and Tech Stage with the relaunch of the Inspex brand at TCT Show. Leading inspection companies such as Olympus, Nikon, FARO, Autodesk and EuroPac exhibited under the Inspex banner, with plans to enhance this feature further in 2017.
During the event organisers Rapid News announced that from 2017 the show floor would be an impressive 30% larger and the event would span three days from 2017 onwards. This increased capacity will allow the popular Inspired Minds education programme to return, provide space for a larger Start Up Zone and bring for the first time three free-to-attend conference stages to the show floor.
With the increasing influence of the 3D tech industry, the organisers also announced the TCT Annual Awards, which will be the global black-tie event that recognises the important contributions of this innovative community on the lives and businesses of the wider community.
Duncan Wood, COO Rapid News Publications, owner of the TCT Group, said: “The overwhelming feeling from the floor is one of increased quality as the hype around 3D printing fades resulting in increasing numbers of buyers on the show floor. Many exhibitors are reporting that they did business directly on their stands, and this coupled with our exciting announcements for 2017 ensures TCT is set to remain as the hub of our global event operations and extremely important to everything we do internationally.”

Rapid News Communications Group Concludes Interplas Acquisition from Reed Exhibitions
Chester, UK, November 14th, 2014: Rapid News Communications Group is delighted to announce that it has concluded the purchase of Interplas from Reed Exhibitions UK.
Interplas is the UK’s largest plastics industry exhibition and the only UK event to cover all of the manufacturing processes, technologies and services within the plastics industry. Under the management of Rapid News since 2011, the event has undergone a remarkable turnaround with visitors, exhibitors and floorspace all increasing during both the 2011 and recent 2014 editions.
The purchase, for an undisclosed amount, concludes a period of licence during which Rapid News have revitalised the event. Much of this success can be attributed to the unique position Rapid News holds operating the key European plastics publications British Plastics and Rubber (BP&R), European Plastic Product Manufacturer (EPPM) and Medical Plastics News (MPN). The strength of audience reach offered by these media brands, along with a deep history in the sector built on long-term relationships, has accelerated the return of the event to the standout plastics event in the UK.
Commenting on the acquisition by Rapid News Communications Group, Philip Law, Director-General of the British Plastics Federation, said: “Interplas now has a clear direction and confidence in the future. It is a further step in the process of making the UK a 'go to place' globally for plastics technology and products.”
Nigel Flowers, Chairman of the Polymer Machinery Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMMDA), said: “From both the PMMDA and UK polymer industry viewpoint it is great news that Interplas has now found a permanent ‘home’ in the Rapid News portfolio. The market needs a showcase event, and this is found in Interplas. It has been especially encouraging to see Interplas flourish this year and we are confident that this success will continue under Rapid’s control.”
Duncan Wood, C.O.O and Event Director at Rapid News Communications Group, commented: “Interplas has continued its resurgence under our management this year and we are delighted now to formally announce the conclusion of the acquisition and officially add it to our already strong plastics portfolio, strengthening our commitment to the UK and wider European plastics industry. 2014 represented a second consecutive edition with solid growth on all the key metrics of number of visitors, exhibitors and space sold and we now have a fantastic foundation which to build the event and we look forward to working with our partners, exhibitors and key associations such as the BPF and PMMDA to develop a world class showcase for the UK plastics industry in 2017."
Interplas 2017 takes place at the NEC, Birmingham, UK on September 26th-28th, 2017.

Serious selling and high spirits during three-day show
The three days of Interplas saw buzzing halls and high spirits as well as some major stand sales, testament to the positivity felt in the industry.
Visitor numbers and footfall was up, with the organisers saying the show an attracted over 10,400 attendees (pending BPA audit) for its 2014 edition, a number that represents growth of 10 percent against 2011 figures alongside increased exhibitor numbers and an expanded show floor.
International attendance at Interplas also increased in 2014, with visitors from 56 countries travelling to the NEC, Birmingham, underlining the importance of the UK plastics sector on the world stage.
“Interplas has continued its resurgence under our management, and 2014 represents a second consecutive edition with solid growth on all the key metrics of number of visitors, exhibitors and space sold,” commented Duncan Wood, COO and Event Director for the show.
“The key to the continued resurgence of Interplas under the management of Rapid News is the level of business created and executed at the event. The post-show feedback this year, has been unequivocally positive in this area.”
Testament to this, Romi Machines UK announced it had sold some 14 machines on the first day of Interplas alone, Richard Hird of Premier Moulding Machinery said that the company had sold four machines and PMS UK sold its Borsche BS150 moulding machine straight off its stand.
Also selling directly off his stand was Kevin Horne, Managing Director of Renmar UK, whose three AEC gravimetric blenders were being taken straight from the NEC to UK manufacturer, Chess Plastics, in Droitwich.
“We’ve had a really good show – the footfall has been excellent and it’s the first time I’ve sold the machinery on display straight off the stand,” Horne told BP&R.
“We’ve invested a lot in our stand this year. Three years ago we couldn’t have justified the cost, as people were coming to look and not buy. Now, however, people are coming ready to purchase machinery and equipment, they are looking at the technology on the stand and asking about lead times and when we can deliver.”
Materials exhibitors were also full of positive news, with Plastribution’s Duncan Scott stating that the show had resulted in several new customer projects and lots of detailed enquiries.
“This is the best Interplas I’ve been to in years. People are here because they want to be,” commented Scott. “We’ve had constant enquiries from potential new customers. There is certainly more optimism about the industry now.”
Over at Resin Trade, the company said the public reaction to its new marketing campaign had been positive and pleasing, with the stand “constantly busy” with enquiries throughout the course of the show.
“We wanted a modern representation of an industry that itself is becoming more modern,” explained Alex Nunn, Marketing Manager at Resin Trade.
“We’ve been inundated with enquiries at the show that are for forward-thinking projects that are more focused on 10 years into the future than stuck 10 years in the past. We want to reflect that modernity with our branding and Interplas was the perfect place to introduce it.”
Manufacturer of antimicrobial and detectable solutions, SteriTouch, exhibited for the first time at Interplas in 2014 and says it is already looking forward to the next show.
“Interplas exceeded all of our expectations,” said Joanna Wilson of SteriTouch. “The atmosphere was great, and we were kept constantly busy with enquiries for the full three days, with interest from a real variety of companies with antimicrobial and detectable requirements for a broad list of applications, from food packaging to flooring.”
Finally, those providing services and consultancy also said interest was high. “We have nearly filled our enquiries book and have had loads of good leads,” said Alex Miles of the British Plastics Federation.
Over at BBE recruitment, Nigel Hyde said having not exhibited at the show since 1999, the company was “very impressed” with attendance and said they’d had a successful show.
PlastikCity was also feeling the buzz, stating that it felt its stand was “one of the busiest at the show,” and said that the numbers in attendance, as well as the high spirits of visitors, was “a clear indication of the positive state of our industry.”
Horsham-based manufacturer of injection-moulded products, Pentagon Plastics, said its first time exhibiting at Interplas had been "a great success."
“This was our first three-day event and it has provided us with valuable new contacts and an informal opportunity to welcome existing customers to the stand. It has also proved a real benefit to touch base with some of our own key suppliers gaining information on other services that they offer that may be of assistance to our own business going forward," said Managing Director, Paul Edwards.
“The busy and vibrant event was well attended and we look forward to exhibiting when it returns in three years time.’’
